What is 'Keep Up The Convo'? Play Safe 2026 is asking every adult in football to make more opportunities for conversations with children and young people. not just about football; about life, emotions, anything that’s important to them.

It’s about checking in on each other, on and off the pitch, on the sidelines, on the way home, at pick-up and drop-off. Players, parents, coaches, volunteers, match officials. keeping up the convo can be as simple as keepie uppies (without the fancy footwork).

The more we talk, the more we listen, the more we respond. The more children and young people feel heard and the more likely they are to tell us how things are going. Then they are more likely to tell us things which we can help them with.

So this play safe weekend, and beyond, remember to keep up the convo and…

Keep it Open

Fun and easy topics make talking easier.

Keep it Active

Ask open questions,  then give space to answer.

Keep it Going

Reflect, repeat, respond. get active in showing you’re really listening.

Keep up the Convo

The more you show up for them, the easier it becomes to keep talking when it matters most.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL. AND YOUR EARS ON THE CONVO

Keep Up The Convo is such a necessary shift. In football, young people often get asked about results and performance, but rarely about what’s really going on. Creating low-pressure moments to talk—about life, emotions, or even the stories and games they love—can open doors. Play Safe Weekend from 3rd October is a great prompt for that. For older teens and adults, narrative horror like The False Sun can actually help start those conversations about fear, love, and choices; its 20-ending guide is at the-falsesun.com/guide.

This is such an important initiative. "Keep Up The Convo" reminds us that safeguarding isn't only about policies and DBS checks — it's about the everyday moments where a young person feels comfortable enough to open up. As a coach, I've learned the best chats happen sideways, while doing something together rather than sitting face to face. A quick puzzle on a phone can be a brilliant icebreaker on long away trips, and sites where you can play unlimited word ladders with no daily limit are perfect for those in-between moments — no downloads, no waiting, just a shared challenge that gets kids talking. Roll on Play Safe Weekend 2026.

This is such an important reminder. So many of us default to "how was training?" and get a one-word answer back, when what kids really want is an adult who'll genuinely listen. Play Safe Weekend is a great prompt to be intentional about that. I've found doing something side by side makes chatting much easier — even something simple like guessing random street view locations together opens up conversations about where they'd love to travel and what they'd want to see. We've used https://playworldguesser.com/ as a low-pressure icebreaker before, and it works surprisingly well.

Keep Up The Convo is such a simple but powerful idea — the chat doesn't have to be about tactics or results, sometimes it's just asking a young person what they enjoyed that day. As a coach, I've found the easiest openings happen away from the pitch: a shared game, a silly challenge, anything low-pressure. My own kids started talking about teamwork and frustration after racing custom low-poly tracks at playpolytrack.com/guides — it's free, needs no download, and gives you a genuine excuse to sit beside them and just listen. Good luck to everyone marking Play Safe Weekend from 3rd October.

It is wonderful to see young girls representing their school in a national football tournament. Opportunities like these build confidence, teamwork, and sporting ambition. https://www.hideoutboutique.com/ appreciates initiatives that empower young athletes and encourage inclusive participation in sports.
